Optimizing Wi-Fi Signals in Multi-Story Buildings

Learn how physical structures interfere with local router frequencies and how to position mesh nodes to cover blind spots.

1. Router Elevation

Always place your primary GPON gateway elevated off the floor (typically 4-6 feet high). Avoid positioning routers inside cabinets, next to metallic mirrors, or adjacent to heavy concrete walls.

2. Unified Dual-Band SSID

Ensure your router settings have dual-band steering enabled. This automatically shifts your smartphone between the high-speed 5 GHz band (optimal for close range) and the longer-range 2.4 GHz band as you move rooms.

3. Deploying Wi-Fi Mesh Extenders

Place secondary mesh nodes halfway between your main router and the wireless dead zone. Do not place nodes directly in the dead zone itself, as they require a stable backhaul link to replicate signals.

Bandwidth: Symmetrical Fiber vs. DSL

An explanation of symmetrical downstream and upstream rates, and why upload capability matters for video calls and remote backups.

What is Symmetrical Bandwidth?

Symmetrical connections offer **identical download and upload speeds**. For example, our 50 Mbps Opal Pro tier delivers exactly 50 Mbps down and 50 Mbps up simultaneously.

Why Upload Speeds Matter
  • Lag-free Video Conferencing: Platforms like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet require high upstream capacity to broadcast your HD video feed cleanly.
  • Cloud Storage: Syncing files to Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive completes in seconds rather than hours.
  • Online Gaming: Lower ping rates and jitter because upstream game commands are dispatched instantly.

Setting Up Static IPv4 Port Forwarding

A walkthrough on setting up custom local server routing or establishing open NAT parameters for local gaming consoles.

Prerequisite: Dedicated Static IP

Standard WAN interfaces use dynamic IP pools that rotate. If you run a local game server or CCTV routing, you should first request a **Static IP address** add-on from our services configuration panel.

Step-by-Step Port Forwarding Setup
  1. Log into your GPON router gateway portal (typically 192.168.100.1 or 192.168.1.1).
  2. Navigate to **Forward Rules** > **Port Mapping Configuration**.
  3. Add a new rule, select your internal client local IP address, choose the protocol (TCP/UDP), and set the external and internal port numbers.
  4. Click Apply to save the NAT configurations.

Solving a Blinking Red LOS Light

What to do when your router reports a Loss of Signal (LOS) red blink, and when to inspect the optical green fiber connector.

What Does Red LOS Mean?

A blinking red LOS (Loss of Signal) indicator light means your GPON ONT router cannot detect light pulses from the central exchange. The connection is completely disconnected because of fiber line signal loss.

Self-Service Steps
  1. Locate the thin yellow fiber cable running into the bottom of your router.
  2. Gently disconnect the green square coupling node, blow clean dust off it, and click it back into place until you hear it snap.
  3. Inspect the cable length running outside your window for sharp bends, tight loops, or external structural pinches.
  4. If the red blink persists, the physical outdoor drop-core line is damaged. Please launch the **Troubleshooter page** to submit an automated NOC maintenance ticket.

Upgrading Speed Tiers Mid-Month

Need temporary extra speed? Learn how we prorate speed tier changes and adjust billing mid-cycle.

How Mid-Month Upgrades Work

Upgrades are **instantaneous** and are processed automatically. You can switch plans by dialing our helpline or logging a ticket. The cost difference is calculated on a prorated basis for the remaining days of the month.

Example Calculation

If you upgrade from Opal Starter to Opal Pro exactly halfway through the billing cycle, your next invoice will show a pro-rated charge for the upgrade duration.

Downgrade Notice

Downgrades are processed at the **end of the calendar month** to prevent sudden package drops or account credit recalculation issues mid-cycle.
